BNI Video rakes in $16M from Comcast, TWC for video delivery

BNI Video has raised more than $16 million from its investors, which include Comcast Interactive Capital, Cisco and Time Warner Cable, for its video control plane software.

BNI Video, which was founded last year, also listed venture capital firms Charles River Ventures and Castile Ventures among its investors.

"BNI's technology has the potential to change the game for video service providers," said Louis Toth, senior managing director at Comcast Interactive Capital. "This platform gives providers additional capabilities and greater flexibility to enrich the consumer experience."

BNI | VideoBNI said its software serves a strategic role in video service providers' (VSPs) video ecosystems by connecting content to subscribers, enabling transcoding and digital rights management, invoking quality of service to ensure the content produces the appropriate user experience, and interfacing with billing and entitlements so that the content is correctly monetized.

"BNI's technology is simple, flexible and scalable, and we look forward to working with BNI to develop more advanced video services for our customers," said Mike LaJoie, chief technology officer at Time Warner Cable and a member of BNI's board of directors.

Time Warner Cable has said it's working on an app for iPads and other new services for video, which BNI Video could play a role in. Cable operators have said they are pursuing migration paths to IP networks, which BNI listed as one of its capabilities.

ThePlatform, which is owned by Comcast, is provisioning Comcast's TV Everywhere service on the back end. This past summer, thePlatform announced it would support delivery of video services to IP-connected devices.

BNI said its software reduces time to market for testing new capabilities and functionality. It's also able to incorporate amplifications such as search, recommendation and social networking into service offerings.

Other feature sets of BNI include:

  • Achieve high transaction rates with fast response times for session requests
  • Automatically upgrade the network without shutdowns or manual intervention
  • Deliver richer, more personalized subscriber experiences
  • Leverage technologies already in place
  • Lower total cost of ownership.

"In an increasingly on-demand world, VSPs need an infrastructure that can enable them to stay ahead of consumer demand and remain competitive," said Conrad Clemson, CEO of BNI Video. "Our software allows VSPs to achieve significant efficiencies in delivering traditional on-demand services, while also giving them the tools they need to deliver the enhanced services of the future."

BNI Video said its first two products, a video control plane and CDN manager, are currently available.
