Goooooal: Univision scores World Cup VOD action with Avail-TVN
Univision and Avail-TVN have teamed up to provide the entire slate of World Cup soccer games on video-on-demand the day after they air live.
The companies said the agreement marked the first time that all 64 matches would be available in on-demand.
The FIFA World Cup tournament starts next month in South Africa and is typically the most-watched sporting even in the world.
Under an industry-wide agreement, Avail-TVN will provide an array of live-to-VOD services, including broadcast signal acquisition and file capture, Nielsen C3 watermark verification, encoding across multiple codecs, asset management, and distribution of both SD and HD versions for all 64 games in the tournament.
In participating systems, digital subscribers will be able to access any game via on-demand for viewing at their convenience 24 hours after it airs. In addition, Avail-TVN said it would provide marketing support, including menu mapping, barker support and other marketing services, to enable easier content discovery.
“High-value sporting events like the World Cup, with a global audience and enormous consumer interest across all time zones, are a natural fit for Avail-TVN’s on-demand platform,” said Jim Riley, chief revenue officer at Avail-TVN. “Univision’s ambitious World Cup offering is unprecedented, and it allows soccer fans to catch all the exciting action on their own schedule, 24-hours after the actual game; we are thrilled to have been chosen to support Univision’s marquee tournament coverage.”
Earlier this year, ESPN announced its 3-D network will kickoff with live World Cup coverage.
