China op expands HD, VOD with Harmonic’s gear
Chinese cable operator Shenzhen Topway Video Communication has beefed up its video-on-demand and HDTV offerings with the help of Harmonic’s headend and edge QAM offerings.
With the upgrades, Shenzhen Topway Video Communication is currently delivering 13 channels of HDTV programming and offering new HD VOD services and enhanced on-demand capabilities, such as time-shifted TV, to its 1 million subscribers.
Shenzhen Topway Video Communication selected an integrated Harmonic platform that includes ProView integrated receiver/decoders (IRDs), Electra 7000 MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) HD encoders, ProStream 1000 stream processors, NSG 9000 edge QAMs and NMX Digital Service Manager.
“Harmonic’s digital video processing expertise is evident in their world-leading stream processing and edge QAM solutions,” said Shangbao Mai, vice president of Shenzhen. “With this upgrade, we have invested in a state-of-the-art infrastructure that expands our digital cable offering with value-added services including broadcast and on-demand HDTV and advanced time-shifted TV capabilities.”
Founded in 1996, Shenzhen is the only cable operator in the Shenzhen special economic zone approved by the central government. Shenzhen Topway Video Communication’s current digital subscribers are more than 1 million, which will expand to an estimated 3 million after consolidation with two surrounding areas.
Since 2002, the company has been upgrading its network to a two-way interactive system in order to offer more HD choices and triple-play services.
