Betting on Internet of Things, Tyco invests in Qolsys

Tyco International introduced a new software platform it intends to be the centerpiece of an Internet of Things (IoT) product strategy, and invested in home automation specialist Qolsys. The company also hired a new CTO, Daryll T. Fogal, to preside over it all.

Pew study: Americans clueless about the Internet

Redbox raising DVD rental rates by 25 percent

Redbox is raising its DVD rental prices by 25 percent in an effort to wring more revenue from the shrinking audience that still watches movies on discs rather than online. The increase announced Monday means the price to check out a DVD from one of Redbox's nearly 44,000 in-store kiosks will climb from $1.20 per day to $1.50 effective Dec. 2. Redbox's Blu-Ray rental rates are jumping 33 percent, from $1.50 per day to $2.

By the numbers: Wi-Fi dominating cellphone data usage

Infographic: On  average,  U.S.  subscribers consumed 1.8 GB of data per month in Q3, and that was roughly the same for iOS and Android phone users. The majority of that data was consumed on Wi-Fi networks, though iOS users relied on Wi-Fi a little more heavily than Android users.

Conviva improves QoE for Liberty Global’s Horizon Go

Liberty Global, the largest international cable operator, has tapped into real-time data processing and quality of experience reporting for its Horizon Go app via a deal with Conviva. Liberty Global currently has Horizon Go launched in seven European countries with more to come, according to Conviva.

AT&T starts Ohio upgrade of Alltel subs

More than a year after acquiring Alltel’s wireless operations, AT&T is ready to launch its upgraded coverage for more than 50,000 Alltel customers in Ohio. Former Alltel subscribers can now access AT&T’s LTE network.

Koch starts tender offer for Oplink transaction

A subsidiary of Koch Industries Inc. has started its tender offer tied to its approximately $445 million acquisition of optical network device company Oplink Communications Inc. The deal between Koch Optics Inc. and Oplink was announced last week. At that time it was said that Koch Optics would start a tender offer for all of Oplink's outstanding stock for $24.25 per share.

Edgeware, Mirada ally on multi-screen delivery system

The two have integrated Edgeware’s VCP, a content delivery system, with Mirada's Iris, which provides the user experience. Service providers can use the combined solution to deliver a unified user experience across multiple devices, including STBs, computers, smartphones and tablets.

Cablevision adds 12 nets to Optimum en Español

Cablevision has spiced up its Spanish-language TV package with the addition of 12 new networks, which brought its total number of channels in its Optimum en Español tier to 55. Cablevision said the new channels were added to the lineup at no additional cost to subscribers of Optimum en Español.

Lightpath ups Flynn to SVP of sales

Lightpath, the commercial services division of Cablevision, has promoted Joseph Flynn to the position of senior vice president of sales. In his new role, Flynn is tasked with overseeing Lightpath’s sales operation, which includes day-to-day leadership and management of all its sales functions.

Aereo files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

Online streaming service Aereo says that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, saying an unfavorable ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court was too difficult to overcome. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that Aereo operates like a cable TV company. As a result, the court said the service violates copyright law unless Aereo pays broadcasters licensing fees for offering TV station programs to customers' devices.

Mobile still a struggle for Intel; PC doing better

Chip-making giant Intel Corp. is still struggling to catch up in mobile computing but says its personal computer business is performing better than expected and its return to revenue growth this year will continue into 2015. Intel's business has suffered as consumers have increasingly turned to smartphones and tablets that mostly use lower-power chips made by other companies.

STELA bill passes House; ends CableCard mandate

This version of the bill eliminates the integration ban, and also includes provisions that ban broadcasters from banding together to negotiate retransmission consent deals with MVPDs. The bill heads to the Senate, where passage is expected to be automatic. The President is expected to sign the bill.

Comcast trials tech tracker

There are probably few things more annoying than being held hostage over a four-hour window for a cable installer to arrive at a customer’s home. Comcast has winnowed down that window to around two hours, but now its trialing a new real-time solution that it hopes will alleviate subscribers’ frustrations.

Grande expands gigabit offering in Austin

For the third time, Grande Communications is expanding its gigabit service in Austin, Texas. Grande’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) gigabit service, which is called “Power 1000,” is now available to new and existing customers in the West Campus area.
