With the supply of IP addresses likely to be depleted in less than two years, the electronics industry’s shift from IPv4 to IPv6 has already begun and must accelerate. The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers is helping with the education effort by offering an online course on the subject.
“IPv6: Impact on Cable Networks” is a seven-week online course on IPv6 as part of a comprehensive effort to prepare the cable industry for the transition to the next-generation network layer Internet Protocol. The course has been developed in partnership with Cisco Systems.
The course, which will provide an overview of the capabilities and roles of IPv6 and DOCSIS 3.0 in the cable network management process, has been designed to help cable engineers and technical professionals to understand the impact of IPv6, as well as the features and benefits that are expected to accompany the adoption of the protocol.
“IPv6 will play a critical role in cable’s ability to deploy the next generation of IP-based services,” said Marv Nelson, senior vice president of strategic initiatives for the SCTE. “We’ve created this course to provide the engineering community with the knowledge and skills that they’ll need to minimize the impact of the transition on cable operators’ businesses and to make the change as seamless as possible for customers.”
The course is part of a multi-faceted SCTE educational commitment that also includes Live Learning Archives, InfoScope Papers and Presentations, and the first in a series of SCTE Primers.
The SCTE course will discuss a full range of topics, including: the rollout aspects of phase 1 for IPv6 implementation; DOCSIS 3.0 integration; configuration, provisioning and troubleshooting the network components; and the impact on the cable networks.
The course will also include in-depth discussions surrounding how to operate IPv6 in tandem with IPv4, as well as the operational issues involved in configuring and managing parallel IP addressing systems. It is anticipated that participants will spend approximately four to six hours per week completing course activities, including on-demand viewing of presentations and scheduled discussions with the instructor. A certificate will be awarded to those who complete the course and the course evaluation.
The course will begin May 24. Registration through April 30 is $200 for SCTE members and $275 for non-members. After April 30, the registration fee will be $250 for members and $325 for non-members. Registration and additional links to SCTE IPv6 resources are available at the SCTE’s Web site.
