Redbox, the company behind the red movie-rental kiosks, is reportedly considering a low-cost Internet video streaming service that could compete with the likes of Netflix.
Web site High-Def Digest was among the first to report that Redbox, which was bought out by majority owner Coinstar last year, was conducting a survey to gauge the potential interest in a streaming service. In the survey, Redbox is asking potential viewers if they would be interested in paying $3.95 per month for unlimited online viewing, as well as four nightly DVD rentals.
By contrast, Netflix’s cheapest unlimited streaming option checks in with an $8.99-per-month price tag with one DVD out at a time. Netflix does enjoy a deployed base across various devices like Blu-ray players and has HD offerings to choose from.
Redbox would also need to strike some major content deals with Hollywood studios for newer releases in order to gain a footing with potential viewers.
