FCC Takes Up USF Reform, Mobile Roaming

Maisie Ramsay, Wireless Week

The FCC says it will address two recommendations from its broadband plan affecting the wireless industry at its next open meeting on April 21: voice and mobile broadband roaming and proposed reforms of the Universal Service Fund (USF).

The commission will examine proposals to overhaul the USF to help subsidize rural broadband instead of fixed-line voice communications.

It also will look into roaming agreements for mobile broadband. FCC action could provide subscribers with mobile Web roaming similar to current arrangements for mobile voice roaming. The commission also will discuss an order to ensure the availability of voice roaming deals.

The commission will address four other recommendations, including a Notice of Inquiry seeking comments on the vulnerability of broadband networks and potential cyber security certifications for communications service providers.
