DirecTV, Harmonic to demo 3-D at NAB
Harmonic, DirecTV and Panasonic are collaborating on a demo of 3-D video at NAB.
DirecTV is on course to be the first of the big pay-TV providers to add 3-D channels to its standard lineup – it’s planning on debuting ESPN 3-D and three dedicated 3-D channels in June.
The NAB demo is going to rely on Harmonic’s Electra encoders to support frame-compatible 3-D video and to serve as the compression engine for DirecTV 3-D video, Harmonic said.
Panasonic will be contributing its Viera Full HD 3-D TVs. The company reports that it has sold out of its initial production of the sets.
Romulo Pontual, CTO of DirecTV, said, “Harmonic is a trusted solution provider for DirecTV, with outstanding solutions including the Electra encoders, which not only enable us to efficiently deliver excellent quality HD, but also can flexibly support new applications such as 3-D.”
