DirecTV and Alcatel-Lucent announced yesterday the first U.S.-based installation of their respective technologies that were designed to serve multi-dwelling units.
While multi-dwelling units (MDUs) have traditionally been served by cable operators, satellite and telco providers have been trying to cut out a piece of the revenue pie. On that note, DirecTV’s IPAdvantage and Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 technologies will be combined to serve up video, data and VoIP services to a 1,296-unit condo community at Shelter Creek in San Bruno, Calif.
Shelter Creek is a “proof of concept” model for DirecTV and Alcatel-Lucent, which hope to deploy their combined technologies to larger properties where rewiring older coaxial cable isn’t cost-effective or feasible.
"The Shelter Creek project is a great example of how DirecTV's services offering can be extended to properties of any age and any size on a nationwide basis – in a simple and cost-effective way," said Dan Terheggen, CEO of Consolidated Smart Systems, DirecTV's Gardena, Calif.-based MDU service operator that spearheaded the project. "The Shelter Creek residents tell us they are thrilled to now have more choice in services and to be able to enjoy the same DirecTV experience as those living in single-family homes.”
DirecTV IPAdvantage, which, despite the name, is not an IPTV service, converts the satellite provider’s video signals into IP video packets. It then sends them to IP-enabled receivers over a single home-run wire in order to deliver satellite TV and other services from a “private” headend located on the property.
The IP distribution platform, in addition to supporting advanced video services like HD and HD DVR receivers, also supports voice, Internet and interactive services.
In other DirecTV news, LodgeNet Interactive Corp. and the satellite provider recently announced that they signed a new 10-year agreement that expands the scope of the companies' joint efforts in serving hotels and hospitals across the United States.
Under the agreement, LodgeNet will continue its distribution relationship with DirecTV for the sale of basic and premium television programming for guest rooms and patient rooms. In addition, the new agreement includes the rights to continue distributing subscription-based sports programming, such as NFL Sunday Ticket, through the LodgeNet pay-per-view system and to continue developing integrated engineering solutions and co-branded marketing promotions targeted to the hospitality industry.
Terms of the agreement weren’t available.
