In the media: Will 4G = tiering?

Will the advent of 4G wireless be the trigger for tiered pricing packages in the wireless industry? Maybe, maybe not, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Wireless carriers are experiencing the same thing cable operators have been dealing with for years: A tiny percentage of their users are responsible for a fantastically disproportionate amount of data traffic on their networks.

4G technologies will offer true broadband speeds and will encourage more data usage on wireless networks. Wireless carriers have said that they’d like to move to a value pricing model, and 4G seems like an obvious opportunity to do so.

With Verizon expected to introduce some 4G coverage this year, The WSJ has been asking the question of both Verizon and AT&T … and both have dodged the question.

Clearwire has bundles with its WiMAX 4G service, but not tiers. The service is resold by Sprint, Comcast and Time Warner Cable, but they do not offer tiers specifically for 4G, either.
