The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers, as part of a concerted effort to put more of an engineering focus into the organization, announced today that it has created the position of chief technology officer and has started a search process to find potential candidates to fill the position.
The new CTO, who will report directly to SCTE President and CEO Mark Dzuban, will be responsible for driving technical leadership and innovation that can help the cable industry achieve several critical goals, which the SCTE said included: further honing the skills of the industry’s field engineers, maximizing value and return from current cable network architectures, and helping to develop the standards that will be critical to operators and programmers as they deploy next-generation services.
“While SCTE performs many valuable functions for the industry, the most important contribution is in driving adoption of the technical innovations that help the industry to reduce costs, optimize network performance and enhance customer satisfaction,” said Dzuban. “Securing the services of a CTO will enable us to work more directly with operators, programmers and vendors to identify needs and shape solutions that have real, meaningful impact on their businesses.”

The establishment of the CTO position is one of several key objectives on the SCTE’s roadmap for the current year. Earlier this month, the organization announced its Smart Energy Management Initiative (SEMI) that was designed to help the cable industry leverage the financial and environmental advantages of implementing “green” strategies.
The SCTE said today it anticipated announcing later this year a variety of other initiatives – including leadership in technological and operational effectiveness programs – that are designed to deliver additional value to the industry and its membership.
