Charter, TWC using Penthera's download technology

Startup Penthera has added Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications to its roster of customers for its video download technology, which complements streaming. The company is currently working on a way to insert ads into downloaded content.

Hulu adds Suddenlink to MSO roster

Suddenlink, which has 1.1 million TV subscribers, is the latest to hook up with Hulu, adding the service to its TiVo set-top box. It already had a partnership with Netflix.

USTelecom has filed a petition against the FCC that on first glance appears to be counter to its own interests in the network neutrality debate. Appearances can be deceiving. The association is engaging in a legal a maneuver to gain standing to comment on the FCC’s order “Protecting and Promoting the Open Internet."

Altice has declared itself out of the running for Time Warner Cable, but if its acquisition of Suddenlink is approved, it might not be finished buying U.S. cable properties. The biggest merger candidates left are Cox Communications, Cablevision, Mediacom and Cable One.

Charter will be spending almost $90 billion to acquire two of its peers. The merged company will serve less than 30 percent of broadband customers receiving 25 Mbps or less nationwide, and only about 17 percent of all video subscribers.

Wave raises cash for network expansion

Wave has raised an additional $130 million through a bond sale. The company said it intends to use the proceeds to expand its gigabit Ethernet fiber network into new markets, as well as to support various business services such as co-location facilities and voice solutions.

The House has left town, having passed a bill to end the NSA's collection of domestic phone metadata. The fate of the NSA's bulk collection of American phone records is now before the Senate, in what is increasingly looking like a game of legislative chicken.

Altice setting its sights on TWC

Neither company has confirmed they are negotiating, but there’s more than just tea leaves being read here. The French company is talking to banks about raising funds, according to Reuters, and Altice controlling shareholder Patrick Drahi visited TWC CEO Rob Marcus yesterday, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The FCC has decided to start assessing fees on direct broadcast satellite companies for the first time. The Commission is also seeking comment on whether and how to revise the way it currently assesses fees on radio and TV broadcasters.
