Cisco ASR 5000Cisco has leveraged the technology from one of its recent acquisitions, Starent, to create a new model for its ASR Series product line. The Cisco ASR 5000 offers mobile operators a platform specifically designed to accommodate the rapid growth of mobile Internet traffic and mobile multimedia applications, the company said.

Cisco said the ASR 5000 allows service providers to utilize Cisco networking expertise across any access, including 2G/3G/4G mobile networks – from cell site to packet core to data center. The vendor warrants that operators using the new product will be able to promise consumers faster mobile Internet speeds and more seamless mobile multimedia experiences.

The Cisco ASR 5000 will be one of the products managed by the newly formed Cisco Mobile Internet Technology Group, led by Ashraf Dahod, the former president and CEO of Starent Networks.

Separately, Cisco plans to create an open architecture that provides greater interoperability with the products it picked up with its recent acquisition of Tandberg’s teleconferencing business, as well as with third-party systems. This integrated architecture will extend features such as one button to push and continuous presence, as well as integration with leading unified communications platforms, Cisco said.
