In an effort to draw data customers away from cable operators, Verizon Communications is offering its DSL service for free for six months to subscribers who sign a one-year agreement.

Verizon’s DSL offer runs until Jan. 16 and includes the following tiers: 1 Mbps, 3 Mbps and 7.1 Mbps.

"Consumers are constantly looking for the most reliable and best-priced products on the market, and we've created a value-packed reason to switch to Verizon," said Susan Retta, vice president of consumer products and services at Verizon. “Customers who order new HSI bundles online will also receive exclusive benefits, including a free modem and an additional $5 off qualifying bundles."

The six-months-free offer also extends to consumers who choose to bundle their up-to-3 or 7.1 Mbps HSI service with Verizon Freedom Essentials unlimited domestic long-distance calling and DirecTV video service.

New customers can also order a triple-play bundle with up-to-3 or 7.1 Mbps data, DirecTV Plus DVR package and Freedom Essentials (unlimited local and long-distance calling) for $70 per month for the first six months.

During the second six months of an annual plan, the bundle with up-to-3 Mbps service is $94.99 per month, and the bundle with up-to-7.1 Mbps service is $10 more, at $104.99 per month, during the second six months of the annual plan.

A double-play bundle that combines up-to-3 or 7.1 Mbps HSI with Verizon Freedom Essentials unlimited domestic long-distance calling – along with free HSI for the first six months –is also available for $40 per month for the first six months of the plan.

During the second six months of an annual plan, the bundle with up-to-3 Mbps service is $69.99 per month. The price for the bundle with up-to-7.1 Mbps service is just $10 more, at $79.99 per month, during the second six months of the annual plan.
