Ericsson to resell Sigma’s fulfillment system

Service fulfillment specialist Sigma Systems eclipsed a handful of rivals to secure a global reseller agreement with Ericsson, which will resell Sigma Systems' Service Management Platform (SMP).

Sigma Systems describes its SMP as a carrier-grade platform that offers rapid service creation, advanced order management and automated provisioning, as well as Sigma's service management solutions for triple-play – including high-speed data and IMS-based IPTV and VoIP – to its hundreds of telco customers.

The Ericsson deal is aimed squarely at telecom/IPTV providers, but the benefits of the Sigma system are equally applicable to MSOs, the company’s product management vice president Rick Mallon told CED at last week’s Cable-Tec Expo.

Ordinarily, a service management system will create a set of rules for each service. If a new service is to be created by combining two existing services (the famous example is Caller ID on TV), the system would then need to create a separate, third set of rules combining the rule sets of the other two. As services are combined, the number of rule sets can grow unwieldy.

Sigma Systems’ SMP is singular, explained Mallon, in that it can create a service by drawing on existing rule sets without generating an endlessly increasing number of new rule sets. System complexity, and with it the potential for failure and increasing cost, is minimized.

The approach alleviates the significant “silo” problem with billing support systems (BSS). While the best approach is to converge BSS systems, Mallon agreed, doing so can be daunting. Service providers can use Sigma Systems’ SMP as an easy bridge among separate BSS silos, and then eventually migrate to a converged BSS system when it makes sense to do so.
