SCTE calls for 2010 Young Canadian Engineer nominations
By CED staff

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers is calling for nominations for the 2010 Young Canadian Engineering Professional of the Year Award. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 11, and they can be submitted here.

The SCTE developed the award and presented it for the first time in February at the 2009 SCTE Canadian Summit. The award recognizes a young cable telecommunications engineering professional in Canada who is already making his or her mark on the industry.

The 2010 award – sponsored by Aurora Networks – will be presented during the 2010 SCTE Canadian Summit’s event luncheon on March 9. The 2010 Summit is set for March 9-10 in Toronto.

Mass. receives money for broadband mapping
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) – Massachusetts has received about $2 million in federal stimulus funding to help identify the speed and location of broadband services in the state over the next five years.

Gov. Deval Patrick said on Friday that the grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration will help Massachusetts determine which parts of the state have broadband, which parts don't and what types of broadband are offered.

The state map will be part of a national map to be created by 2011 to guide policies aimed at expanding high-speed Internet access. Patrick met in Washington earlier this week with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke to push for the state's broadband priorities.
