Motorola goes cross-platform at IBC

It’s going to be a cross-platform world, and Motorola’s Home and Networks Mobility business is all over it with a new encoder that supports both MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 standard-definition and high-definition encoding and transcoding and looks ahead to provide early support for emerging formats – specifically 1080P/50 Hz and 1080P/60 Hz resolutions using the MPEG-4 format.

The company said its compression engine supports all popular video formats, including 1080i and 720p, and is designed to keep pace with service providers’ future video requirements by providing additional processing horsepower to support emerging services such as 3-D television and multi-stream output.

The new platform, named Motorola SE-6000, accepts baseband SD and HD video, as well as pre-compressed MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 streams, to act as both a high-performance encoder and transcoder for satellite, cable and IPTV applications.

The announcement was made at the IBC show now running in Amsterdam. At the show, Motorola is also hosting several demonstrations. In a typical operator headend environment, Motorola is showcasing how it enables operators to optimize network performance and manage complex content processing and delivery – in multiple formats to multiple devices.

The demos include the new encoder, as well as Motorola’s new universal edge QAM, the Apex1000, which offers MPEG-4 rate shaping in a single box with SimulCrypt-compliant conditional access.

Motorola will also have on hand the CherryPicker application platform and the Motorola NBBS device management system – a flexible, IP-based solution for managing devices from data and digital voice modems to integrated Wi-Fi gateways and video set-tops, delivering service assurance and allowing operators to increase service revenue while reducing operational costs.

Also on display is the Communications Convergence Engine (CCE), which enables operators to rapidly converge, design, package, deploy and manage a broad range of compelling services, personalizing content across the ‘three screens’ of the TV, the PC and the mobile device.

Motorola is highlighting key innovations that bring richer, more personalized content to consumers in and around their homes.

Motorola is also revealing a line of energy-efficient IPTV set-tops, its new B-3 video server, its KreaTV open application platform, and a new transport gateway that delivers interactive, on-demand cable TV and IP-based media services around the home.
