Canada’s Craig Wireless picks Motorola for WiMAX

Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility division announced today that it was picked by Craig Wireless Systems to build a new 802.16e WiMAX network in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Motorola said the system for Vancouver is the first commercial deployment of its mobile WiMAX technology in Canada, and that it follows up on an Industry Canada decision to award a Broadband Radio Service License to Craig Wireless Inc.

With the deal, Motorola will provide its end-to-end WiMAX platform, including base stations, wireless access controllers and an operation and maintenance center (OMC). Motorola also will provide supporting services for network design, planning, installation and optimization for end-to-end integration of the network, which will operate in the 2.5 GHz spectrum band.

“The Motorola solution will enable us to hit the ground running in our Vancouver market and seize immediate opportunities to serve our customers with new mobile services and applications,” said Rod Vandenbos, president of Craig Wireless Systems. “Our customers in Vancouver will be able to enjoy fast, reliable connections to the Internet anywhere they live, work or play.”

Motorola said its WiMAX offering was designed to enable rapid implementation of VoIP and broadband services such as high-speed Internet, video streaming and virtual private network (VPN) access in fixed, nomadic and mobile environments.
