AT & T boots up beta site for online videos
AT&T has joined the ranks of video providers that are offering TV shows and movies online.
“We have started a soft launch of a new site called AT&T Entertainment,” an AT&T spokesman said via e-mail. “This site will feature free online content available to any consumer. We’re finalizing a few final elements, and we’ll share more details on our official launch soon.”
Last week, Verizon and Time Warner Cable announced they were taking part in Time Warner’s TV Everywhere project, while DirecTV is reportedly interested in doing its own version, as well. Comcast finished up its trial with Time Warner, which it calls On Demand Online, last month and could be adding to the 5,000 trial participants.
The AT&T Web portal features content that is free to anyone who accesses the site, as well as additional content for its own subscribers. TV shows include NBC’s “The Office” and “30 Rock,” as well as CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother.”
Some shows, such as “My Name is Earl,” have links to the same programs on Hulu’s Web site. Hulu is jointly owned by NBC Universal, News Corp and, as of earlier this year, Walt Disney. To date, Hulu hasn’t had access to CBS’ shows, but AT&T has CBS listed as one of the networks on its new Web portal. CBS is also taking part in Time Warner Cable’s and Comcast’s online services.
In addition to CBS, AT&T also lists USA, CNBC, Bravo and Syfy – all of which are owned by NBCU – ABC, ABC Family, PBS, Universal and MGM among the content providers for its Web portal.
