Arris snags assets of EGT
Arris said it has acquired patents and video processing technology for digital networks from EG Technology (EGT), and the company will bring on board 20-25 of EGT’s current employees.
With the deal, Arris will be picking what it described as multi-functional, flexible and scalable video processors.
No single video processor is optimum for every video processing task; having a portfolio of processors to offer is therefore a benefit.
Arris is buying four of the five processors that EGT offers:
- Encore Encoder
- Quartet Encoder
- VIPr Transcoder
- HEMi Edge Encoder
Arris will label the processors with both its brand and EGT’s.
The Encore and Quartet are dedicated to MPEG-2 processing. The latter is described as providing higher-quality encoding than the former.
The HEMi, or Head End Micro, is described by EGT as a cost-efficient, multichannel edge encoder used for insertion of local channels in MDUs and closed community markets.
The VIPr, meanwhile, is a transcoder able to convert MPEG-4 to MPEG-2, downconvert HD to SD and recode MPEG-2 to MPEG-2. EGT says the VIPr is suited for constant bit rate (CBR) processing in switched digital video applications, variable bit rate (VBR) for 3:1 HD, local multiplex configuration management and SD + HD multiplexing.
Frequently, video encoders are implemented in ASICs. EGT elected to use DSPs for its processors. The company has a proprietary approach to video encoding (called PicturePerfect) that it uses in its processors.
"The addition of EGT's video processing portfolio to the Arris portfolio is another step in our evolution toward addressing all of the quad-play, three-screen needs of broadband network operators," said Jim Lakin, president of Arris Advanced Technology. "The primary benefits from this acquisition will be the long-term enhanced engineering and solution capabilities the EGT product portfolio will enable. The transaction is expected to be neutral with respect to earnings per share, excluding amortization of intangibles associated with the acquisition."
