Cisco said it is doubling the density of its flagship edge router, the Cisco Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series.

Simultaneously, Cisco said Telstra is deploying its ASR 9000 routers in its carrier Ethernet network. The Australian carrier had previously deployed Cisco’s CRS-1 Carrier Routing System (CRS) router in the core of its network. 

Cisco is accomplishing the feat with a single-slot 16 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) line card capable of delivering more than 100 Gbps; routers typically top out at 50 Gbps.

Cisco said it has plans for subsequent upgrades that could bring 9000 Series routers up to 400 Gbps per slot.

Increasing the density of routers is a response to the increasing amount of video being routed via the Internet.
