ADB playing convergence card at IBC

Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) announced that its plans for the IBC show will including a demonstration of providing linear and on-demand services across hybrid networks, focused, of course, on the company’s set-tops.

ADB plans to show how it is enabling television, Internet and personal content to converge and be accessible where consumers enjoy it most: on their flat-screen TV.

“Cloud networking” or “convergence” are two ways of getting to the same thing, but ADB is sticking with the latter for IBC.

“We expect content convergence to be a major theme of IBC 2009, particularly addressing how network operators handle the inevitable interaction between TV, other CE devices and the Internet,” said ADB CEO François Pogodalla. “Trends in multimedia consumption and consumer tastes mean it is now time to start preparing for a new consumer TV experience in every home. This concept requires set-top boxes that interact with the television network, the broadband Internet and all local devices including PCs, games consoles and mobile phones, enabling people to access all the content they want on the TV and home theatre system.”

The company said it will be using DivX-encoded content on its 3810TW hybrid DVB-T/IPTV set-top box. Consumers can access DivX files from their PC and play them on the television, and pay-TV operators can enhance their VOD offering with DivX content, which includes old and niche movies that are not always available in other formats.

ADB said it will also show how a full range of Web services can be brought to the TV screen. In partnership with the Stream Group, the company will demonstrate the Solocoo applications, including access to YouTube and Twitter and the ability to chat on Facebook and recommend TV programs to friends.

To enable the consumer TV experience, the consumer electronics devices need to complement each other. To illustrate the point, ADB will show how its set-top boxes and multi-room DVR applications enable content sharing around the customer home using DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) and UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) home networking.

Enhanced navigation and user interface
The user interface is central to the consumer TV experience, and ADB’s enhanced 3-D graphics engine enables network operators to deliver easy-to-navigate content libraries and EPGs. Thanks to this innovative graphics engine, ADB can support interactive TV graphics, fluid motion and a full suite of 3-D animation effects on platforms that were previously limited to the 2-D world.
