Arris posts Q2 profit
By The Associated Press

(AP) – Arris Group Inc., a communications equipment company, on Thursday reported higher second-quarter earnings, helped by sales of more profitable products. Net income jumped to $22.9 million, or 18 cents per share, compared with $7.8 million, or 6 cents per share, last year. Adjusted earnings in the most recent quarter totaled 27 cents per share, excluding equity compensation expenses, non-cash interest related to convertible debt and other costs.

Sales slipped to $278.5 million from $281.1 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters predicted 22 cents per share and slightly higher revenue of $280.9 million.

Arris said gross margin was 42.1 percent, up sharply from 33 percent a year ago, because of strong sales of cable modem termination systems (CMTS) and MCS products, which include content and operations management systems, operations management systems and fixed-mobile convergence networks.

For the third quarter, adjusted earnings per share are expected to range between 22 cents and 26 cents, the company said. Analysts, who usually exclude items, expect 23 cents per share, on average. Sales are forecast to range between $260 million and $280 million, below analysts' average $289.8 million estimate.
