Alcatel-Lucent snags CDN specialist Velocix
Alcatel-Lucent has purchased Velocix, which offers content delivery network infrastructure and services to Internet and broadband service providers.
"This acquisition strengthens our leading-edge portfolio of products and services in a key strategic area. Combined with our integration capabilities, it fits nicely into our application enablement strategy and our vision of the 'high-leverage network' that supports it. It also demonstrates our company's commitment to investing in the capabilities, know-how and technologies needed to effectively support the rapid evolution toward a video-centric world – with maximum reliability and optimal quality of experience," said Philippe Keryer, president of Alcatel-Lucent's carrier product group.
Headquartered in the U.K., Velocix provides an Internet fast lane for digital assets such as video, music, software and games.
In December, the company launched a video delivery system that it said corrects “fault lines” that exist within the current Internet economy. Velocix Metro was designed to improve quality of service, while also cutting down the cost of delivering video content over the Internet.
And in November, Verizon announced a partnership with Velocix for a new broadband CDN. Velocix technology was deployed in the Verizon backbone network to reinforce Verizon's network design, offering content owners and distributors a new pathway to Verizon customers.
