Hughes Europe signs another Direcway reseller

Plans at satellite company Hughes Network Systems are to launch a new Ka-band two-way satellite broadband service called Spaceway next year to enterprise customers, but its European subsidiary is still signing up resellers for its Ku-band-based Direcway service in the meantime. The latest provider to sign up with Direcway service is Czech Republic operator Pegas Wireless s.

SureWest replaces Intertainer with TVN

SureWest Communications has tapped TVN Entertainment to replace down-and-out Intertainer as its video-on-demand content and transport supplier. SureWest, which snapped up the assets of overbuilder Winfirst last year for cents on the dollar, offers VOD, high-speed data and telephony services to about 5,660 customers in Sacramento, Calif.

MPLS, Frame Relay forums to become one

The Multiprotocol Label Switching Forum and the Frame Relay Forum intend to merge into one organization. The combined organization, initially to be known as the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance, will ask members of both groups to approve the union. The greenlight on the merger could be given in the next two months, the organizations said.

Revenues, shipments drop at Com21

Broadband equipment provider Com21 Inc. said revenues and shipments dropped significantly in the fourth quarter of 2002. Com21 reported revenues of $6.1 million, down 52 percent from $12.7 million in the previous period, while pro forma gross margins dropped three points to 19 percent. CSG Systems reports quarterly growth, yearly income decline

Customer care and billing systems provider CSG Systems announced the results of its fourth quarter financials, citing revenue growth, but lower earnings. For the quarter most recently ended, CSG claimed revenues of $155.2 million, a 31 percent increase from the same-year period. Concurrent Computer Corp. and broadband transport firm Manticom Networks said they have completed interoperability certification between Concurrent's line of MediaHawk video servers and Manticom's GigE-based Scorpion 4104 platform. Manticom claims its platform, which scales from 2.5 Gbps to 20 Gbps, can push VOD economics below $35 per-provisioned subscriber.

Adelphia Business Solutions to sell off some assets

The problems at MSO Adelphia Communications have been well documented, but its business services arm seems to be well on the way of emerging in decent shape after its bankruptcy restructuring process is complete. Part of that restructuring will include the sale of select assets in nine previously closed markets, it was announced, as a result of a recent ruling in bankruptcy court.
