Fiber-optic provider Level 3 Communications is expanding its operations in the Nashville area in order to better serve mid-market businesses with its slate of voice, Internet and data offerings.

Level 3 said it is working on growing its portfolio of service offerings for enterprises, including a high-bandwidth Ethernet service.

“We understand that the national economy is struggling right now and many companies are curbing or halting expansion plans. But the Nashville area remains a thriving business community, and we believe it is an ideal time to expand and take advantage of business opportunities," said Tom Bailey, Level 3's Nashville general manager.

In addition to beefing up its service portfolio in the area, Level 3 will continue to expand its fiber-optic footprint, which already passes more than 3,000 business locations in middle Tennessee, including Davidson, Robertson and Williamson counties.

As part of this increased local focus, Level 3 said it’s growing and realigning its workforce in the Nashville area to create more intimacy with customers and enhance the customer experience. In order to reach this goal, Level 3 is adding to its sales and customer support employees in the area.

Last week, Level 3 joined forces with Aspera to create a new high-speed content upload service that enables rapid uploading of multimedia content to Level 3’s Origin Storage Platform (story here). Additionally, the company’s Business Markets Group (BMG) has expanded its operations along the Front Range, which includes large metropolitan areas such as Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs in Colorado.
