HONOLULU (AP) – A proposal meant to speed up Hawaii's Internet speeds has died in the state Legislature.

Disagreement among lawmakers, Internet providers and regulatory agencies caused the measure to stall out in its conference committee last week.

Legislators say it will be reconsidered next year.

House Finance Committee Chairman Marcus Oshiro says everyone agrees on the goal of trying to provide high-speed Internet services at affordable prices, but details of the bill need to be worked out.

The measure would have created a new Hawaii Communications Commission to regulate all Internet service providers, including phone and cable (story here).

Both Democratic legislators and Republican Gov. Linda Lingle pushed for the proposal.
