Qwest Communications plans on closing the doors at two customer-service call centers by July 15.
According to The Denver Post, Qwest will close a call center in Littleton, Colo., which is a suburb of Denver, and one in Omaha, Neb., resulting in the loss of 300 jobs.
Some displaced workers will be able to take similar jobs at other locations or find other positions at Qwest. Qwest cited online technologies such as instant chat and a new Twitter.com option as the reason for a reduction in the number of customer calls that Qwest receives.
Qwest's presence on Twitter is called “Talk to Qwest." The Talk to Qwest team monitors for customer service-related "tweets" and responds to and resolves customers’ problems. Comcast, the nation’s largest cable operator, also uses Twitter to monitor customers’ needs and concerns.
Earlier in the week, the Post reported that Denver-based Qwest started notifying subscribers this month that its branded cell phone service will be discontinued by October.
Subscribers of the service, which was marketed through a partnership with Sprint Nextel, will have to switch to Verizon Wireless to continue receiving bundled discounts.
