TiVo, SeaChange join forces to integrate VOD on TiVo boxes

SeaChange and TiVo said today that they have hooked up to integrate cable video-on-demand (VOD) services onto TiVo’s HD DVRs.

The VOD play is the next step in TiVo’s efforts to parlay its user experience into the cable industry. TiVo has deals in place with Cox Communications and Comcast for their subscribers to use its interface (story here).

"By teaming with SeaChange, we are enabling cable operators without OCAP/tru2way deployment plans to increase the breadth and depth of their offering by quickly deploying TiVo set-top boxes that seamlessly integrate VOD in a single, intuitive TiVo interface," said Tom Rogers, TiVo's president and CEO. "This solution also enables participating MSOs to take their on-demand offering to a whole new level by highlighting VOD titles within TiVo universal search results. And the beauty of this is that it can be achieved faster and at a lower cost than most solutions that have been available to cable operators to date."

TiVo said the integrated experience will be available to participating cable operators on select TiVo-branded high-definition (HD) cable set-top boxes later this year.

TiVo and Alticast also announced today that they’ve entered into an agreement that’s designed to combine TiVo’s user experience with Alticast’s embedded software.

The Alticast core technology, comprising the Java-based DVB-MHP, OCAP/tru2way technology and Blu-ray Disc Java, provide a common software foundation enabling hardware-independent deployment of an application.

Alticast said its platform makes it easier for consumer electronics companies to create advanced cable set-top boxes, including combination set-top boxes and TV sets or Blu-ray Disc players.

The two companies said the collaboration showed their continued commitment to provide sophisticated, cable-ready products for operators looking to shed hardware costs while providing subscribers with compelling interactive services and user experiences.
