Moto adds gateways, CPE management software
Motorola introduced four new SURFboard gateways with integrated networking capabilities, simultaneously with software capable of remote management of customer premises equipment (CPE) and other devices on cable and WiMAX networks.
The ability to bridge cable and WiMAX CPE is useful for the MSO investors in Sprint’s Clearwire subsidiary. Comcast was the first among them to announce it will resell the Clear WiMAX service, which it plans to do in Portland, Ore. (story here). Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks will be able to do likewise as Clearwire introduces mobile WiMAX in their markets.
Motorola also released its latest software for its DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS.
Two of the new SURFboards (the SBG901 and SBG941) integrate a DOCSIS 2.0 cable data modem and gateway. The two other models (the SVG1501 and SVG2501) add digital voice modems to the mix. All four include a Wi-Fi router.
The gateways are designed for consumer self-installation. The gateways are connected via a USB port. And subscribers do not have to install any software from CD-ROMs. Motorola says the Wi-Fi networking wizard includes a ‘zero-touch’ auto provisioning tool.
When the Wi-Fi wizard is finished, a secure Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)-encrypted wireless connection is established to the gateway. The new models include a built-in firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection, intrusion detection and denial of service (DOS) attack prevention.
The SBG901 features a DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem, an IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless access point and an advanced firewall. The SBG941 has all of that and adds an integrated four-port switch with 10/100 Base-T Ethernet.
The SVG1501 incorporates an embedded multimedia terminal adapter (eMTA) that supports two phone lines, a four-port 10/100 Base-T Ethernet router, an advanced firewall and an IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless access point. The SVG1501 lacks a battery backup; the SVG2501 includes a field-replaceable integrated Lithium-ion battery backup.
The products use Energy Star-qualified power supplies, and the devices and power supplies are compliant with European Code of Conduct regulations. In addition, Motorola’s lead-free circuit boards are RoHS-compliant.
Like other Motorola CPE, the new SURFboards can be managed through Motorola’s NBBS remote device management solution. The software enables cable operators to remotely access, configure, monitor and troubleshoot consumer devices, home networks and services.
Motorola has expanded its NBBS with a DOCSIS (SNMP) Remote Device Management Module for cable and WiMAX. The unified platform can monitor and manage data and digital voice modems, integrated Wi-Fi gateways, video set-tops and CPE from a range of manufacturers.
The new NBBS module will also enable MSOs to perform LAN configuration and application-level download management.
NBBS works with any protocol and any domain and supports all common-device management interfaces, including SNMP, OMA-DM, TR-069, CLI and HTTP-based Web interfaces, Motorola said, providing the ultimate access to a range of devices for service provisioning, ongoing management and support.
Alan Lefkof, Motorola’s corporate vice president and general manager for broadband home gateways and software, said: “With NBBS, operators can have their CPE management keep pace with the evolving device environment. In addition, the need for remote management is critical to avoiding significant incremental support costs while retaining customers. The NBBS platform offers operators an automated solution that addresses both cost reduction and customer churn by delivering increased levels of service.”
Separately, Motorola now has available release 5.2 software for its DOCSIS 3.0 bronze-qualified BSR 64000 integrated CMTS (I-CMTS). The update introduces TX32 redundancy, providing an advanced level of system-wide high availability and service assurance for ultra-broadband networks, delivering downstream bonded services for commercial and high-tier customers, as well as increased service tiers for residential customers, according to the company.
With dual TX32 modules per chassis, the new release supports a doubling of BSR 64000 downstream capacity, useful to support downloading and streaming of HDTV and IPTV applications.
