• Optimum Lightpath hires product exec

Optimum Lightpath has hired John Macario as senior vice president of product strategy and management.
Macario was president of Savatar, a consulting and research firm focused on helping clients bring VoIP communications solutions to market. Savatar’s clients included AT&T, Cisco, Microsoft, Google and British Telecom, where the company was relied upon to drive product launches into the business community.
Macario will report to Dave Pistacchio, executive vice president and general manager of Optimum Lightpath.
• AT&T, Dish intro new iTV apps

AT&T and Dish Network have both announced interactive television (iTV) applications this week.
Dish subscribers now have access to an interactive Fandango (owned by Comcast) application that allows them to purchase movie tickets with their remote control. The app is powered by OpenTV middleware and uses subscribers’ zip codes to search for nearby theater listings and show times. Dish subs with phone lines connected to their set-top boxes can use their remote and credit card to purchase tickets at Fandango-enabled theaters through a secure connection.
And AT&T U-verse TV customers now have a new app – College Basketball from Yahoo Sports. Available on the AT&T U-bar, subscribers can view tournament brackets, their personalized completed bracket, game summaries and box scores, and video clips of game analysis and commentary.
• Arris promotes sales VP Whalen

Arris has promoted Dan Whalen to senior vice president of sales.
Whalen had been the account manager for Comcast; with the promotion, he retains executive management responsibility for Comcast sales and assumes similar responsibility for Cablevision and accounts in Canada and the Eastern U.S.
Whalen joined Arris in January 2008 as the vice president of sales for the Comcast account. Previously, he had been director of service sales for the U.S. cable area for Cisco Systems. Earlier, Whalen held senior positions with Comdisco, KPMG Consulting and Bell Atlantic Networks.
• Akamai first to offer new Microsoft streaming

Cambridge, Mass.-based Akamai Technologies said it’s the first company to offer Microsoft’s Internet Information Services 7.0 (IIS7) Smooth Streaming technology to customers.
Akamai said its AdaptiveEdge Streaming for Microsoft Silverlight, which uses IIS7, adapts stream quality based on a user’s connection speed, which means consumers with high bandwidth connections can experience true high-definition (HD)-quality streaming, while consumers with lower connection speeds can receive the highest-quality video stream available for their levels of connectivity.
At the same time, Akamai said media companies’ online initiatives can benefit from network scalability and availability using distributed HTTP-based Web servers across Akamai’s globally distributed network.
