Motorola builds PON portfolio with Alloptic deal

Motorola said today that its passive optical network (PON) portfolio will benefit through a strategic agreement with Alloptic.

The deal gives Motorola exclusive rights to offer Alloptic’s Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG) products to cable operators worldwide. Motorola will add Alloptic’s platform into its own portfolio of RFoG offerings to help cable operators extend fiber deeper into their networks in order to increase bandwidth for video, voice and data services.

“The strong interest in RFoG solutions by cable operators stems from their increased need to deploy new and operationally sensitive business and residential network architectures,” said George Simmons, corporate vice president and general manager of access network solutions at Motorola. “With this agreement, Motorola is now poised to enable customers’ long-term, all-fiber strategies with FTTH solutions that address their economic requirements and deployment timelines.”

By helping to protect existing investments in infrastructure and customer premises equipment, RFoG minimizes capital expenditure and provides cable operators with the ability to gracefully evolve to an all-fiber network, according to Motorola.

Motorola said its RFoG product line gives cable operators the ability to launch existing video, voice and data services over an all-fiber network supporting residential and commercial service applications where legacy voice and new IP-based services are needed.
