Motorola powers up its first Latin American DOCSIS 3.0 deployment

Brazilian service provider Net is using DOCSIS 3.0-based gear for its ultra broadband deployment in Sao Paulo, which marks the first time that Motorola’s DOCSIS 3.0 platform has been deployed in Latin America.

While channel bonding can result in downstream speeds of up to 160 Mbps, Net’s maximum speed currently tops out at 60 Mbps. Motorola has previously installed its DOCSIS 3.0-enabled gear in Japan, Korea and Singapore.

In order to reach the increased speeds, Net is bonding four downstream channels in the deployment. 

In Brazil, Motorola provided the equipment to enable Net, the largest multiservice cable operator in Latin America, to inaugurate its Net Vírtua 5G service in Sao Paulo. This is the fifth generation of its broadband service, permitting ultra-high network access speeds. The new service will be available in two versions, 20 MB and 60 MB, on a trial basis, free of charge for all subscribers to the company’s Net Combo HD Max package.

Motorola’s DOCSIS 3.0 equipment comprises the BSR6400/CMTS-Edge (Cable Modem Termination System) broadband router and the SURFBoard 6120 cable modem. The Surfboard 6120 cable modem is for users who need ultra-high-speed connections, both in the home and in small- and mid-sized companies.

Motorola’s cable modems are certified by CableLabs, while its CMTS gained bronze certification by CableLabs (story here).
