Teradata Corp. has introduced a call detail record (CDR) appliance for the telecommunications industry – the Teradata Extreme Data Appliance for CDRs.
The appliance is available to the cable industry because operators are generating CDRs for VoIP services, according to David Grant, vice president of industry solutions for communications, media and entertainment at Teradata.
The plug-and-play CDR appliance is a purpose-built platform that can load and store billions of CDRs at the lowest price per terabyte in the industry, according to Teradata. The CDR appliance also enables faster understanding of network performance and supports troubleshooting, capacity planning, least-cost routing and location-based analytics.
The appliance captures CDRs from the network, providing operations and engineering departments with information, such as call traffic patterns and call success or failure.

Operations: Network and equipment capacity can be used to their fullest, improving return on capital investments and reducing third-party network cost. In addition, service providers can more readily identify and verify problems associated with a particular handset or handset manufacturer.
Capacity Planning: Traffic engineers can improve their ability to properly size the network using call detail to determine peak usage and enable efficient call routing.
Revenue and Cost Management: Settlements between service providers depend on a complete capture of all transactions between the two entities for the given period. Incomplete information can result in a failure to bill accurately for all of the transactions and potentially lost revenue.
The Teradata Extreme Data Appliance for CDRs loads information directly from the network, capturing details about network performance while eliminating multiple instances of CDR data and the cost of storing and managing redundant data, the company said. And the company’s advanced compression capabilities yield a space savings of up to 70 percent.
“Access to detailed data allows drill-down analysis, but keeping this data available for network support applications has been expensive,” Grant said. “Therefore, all but the most recent CDR data is typically archived. This makes historical analysis difficult, if not impossible. With the CDR appliance, service providers gain the value of a single source of detailed data at a far lower cost.”
In addition to the CDR appliance, Teradata also provides digital advertising, customer management and integrated Web analytics services to cable operators.
Teradata’s digital advertising offering deals with audience intelligence. The company can collect subscriber information from different sources and can build that into an audience DNA, enabling operators to “slice and dice” the information so that they can better represent their audience to advertisers, Grant told CED. Teradata is currently in discussions with cable operators for this solution.
The company’s customer management solution, which is also available to satellite providers such as DirecTV, helps operators analyze their subscribers and improve customer retention efforts, which is becoming more and more important. With Teradata’s info and analytics, operators can identify which subscribers are most likely to leave, as well as what can be offered to those subscribers to try and convince them to stay.
And with integrated Web analytics, Teradata can take the Web analytics info and combine it with subscriber information to give operators a 360-degree view of their subscriber base.
