J:COM to deploy DVD/HD set-top
Jupiter Telecommunications (J:COM) on Dec. 17 will start offering a new service tier based on a new set-top integrated with both a hard drive and a DVD recorder/player.
The new STB model, designated the TZ-DCH8000, has a DVD drive with high-definition video recording capability. The unit’s hard drive has a 500 gigabyte capacity, approximately four times the storage of set-tops previously deployed by J:COM.
J:COM is calling its new service HDR Plus. Based on the 500 GB drive, the service will allow users to record up to 80 hours of digital high-definition video. The unit includes a pair of tuners, so that two programs could be recorded simultaneously.
Since introducing its original HDR service in April 2006, J:COM has installed 353,800 HDR units (as of Sept. 30, 2008), which the company said represents approximately 20 percent of its digital service subscribing households.
It was not clear who the manufacturer of the new STB is. The logo on the box in the low-resolution photo provided by J:COM appears to be Panasonic’s. J:COM has sourced products from Matsushita/Panasonic in the past. J:COM was not available to respond at press time.
