Comcast’s VOD platform in more than 30 million homes

The Comcast Media Center (CMS) said today that its MPEG-2 VOD platform now encompasses over 90 percent of the country’s top cable MSOs and more than 30 million VOD-enabled households.

The CMC, which said it continues to add more SD and HD content to the lineup of VOD programming it distributes each month, currently delivers more than 9,000 VOD assets from over 275 content providers to Comcast and other cable MSOs. 

The payload of monthly VOD assets includes hundreds of HD VOD programs, allowing cable system operators to increase the number of HD programming choices that are available to their customers at any given time.

“As industry analysts are confirming, HD is a game-changer in the video space, and HD VOD provides cable system operators with a significant competitive advantage,” said Gary Traver, Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer for Comcast Media Center. “Working with the content community, we will continue to expand the scope and depth of HD content that’s available to affiliates using MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 VOD systems”

The CMC launched the MPEG-2 VOD platform in 2003, and now has expanded its VOD capabilities to support MPEG 4 as well as MPEG 2 encoding and transport to cable systems nationwide.

The CMC, a business unit of Comcast, was founded by TCI as the National Digital Television Center (NDTC) in the mid-1990s and launched the HITS platform and many first-generation digital TV networks/multiplexes and iTV applications. 

The company’s name was changed to AT&T Digital Media Center, and then Comcast Media Center, to reflect its expansion into IP-based capabilities and platforms under ownership by AT&T and Comcast. HITS Quantum currently serves more than 400 MSOs operating more than 2,000 cable systems across the U.S.
