Tiscali has decided to build its IPTV service on Cisco’s Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture, using Cisco’s IPTV headend equipment and technology.
The Italian ISP had been trialing the service over the summer.
Tiscali.tv IPTV, a standard-definition (SD) digital video service based on MPEG-4, will compete with similar new offerings from Telecom Italia and FastWeb.
Cisco said that included in the products it will supply are its MPEG-4 AVC Advanced Encoder (Model D9034), program and commercial receivers (Models D9850 and D9844), 4948 aggregation routers, a digital content manager (Model D9900) and the Galaxy Acquisition Platform, including Atlas DVB-T receivers.
Cisco’s Rosa Network Management System will be used to monitor and control the network devices. Rosa can manage remote sites for video content contribution and distribution for Tiscali from a central network operations site.
