Motorola enhances on-demand platform with AMM

Motorola has expanded its on-demand portfolio with features that utilize adaptive media management (AMM), a technology framework that creates a flexible, cost-effective platform for the delivery of on-demand services, including VOD, time-shifted TV and on-demand advertising.

Motorola's AMM manages the placement of content within the network and identifies and assigns the most effective streaming and storage technology [DRAM, Flash, Disk, or network attached storage (NAS)/storage area networks (SAN)].

The platform enables Motorola's video service provider (VSP) customers to adapt to changing content usage patterns while optimizing storage, streaming and network costs, Motorola said.

"We're helping our customers future-proof their networks by delivering flexible solutions built around a proven, on-demand platform," said Buddy Snow, senior director of on-demand video for Motorola's Home and Networks Mobility business. "Our adaptive media management approach allows them to optimize the cost of service delivery as they scale their deployment of advanced services. By making it easy for our customers to grow and manage their on-demand content, we are accelerating the delivery of personalized media experiences for consumers."

Motorola's portfolio enhancements include the following:

  • ODM2000 – Motorola's next-generation, on-demand media blade, designed to improve the performance, scalability and reliability of the company's B1 video server; it’s an ingest and streaming module that supports a configurable cache of both DRAM and Flash memory, designed to support the full range of advanced video services. The B-1 utilizes Motorola's AMM to manage content and streaming between DRAM, Flash memory, and local and remote storage.
  • CPS1000 cluster manager – The first component of Motorola's content propagation system; designed to optimize storage, streaming and network resources, it improves the fault resiliency of co-located or geographically distributed on-demand elements.
  • On-demand solution system release 4.0 (SR4.0) – The CPS1000 forms part of SR4.0, which also supports the following functionality: enhanced H.264 support, integration with Tandberg Openstream 4.0, chaptering functionality for creating a DVD-like experience on VOD, and ranged playlists that enable the B-1 to insert targeted ads at any point in on-demand content.

Motorola's SR4.0 is available today, while the ODM2000 will be available in the first quarter of 2009.
