Harmonic introduced a multi-screen transcoder and an HD encoder today at the IBC show in Amsterdam.
The all-IP, software-based, multi-screen encoder, which is called the ProStream 4000, enables a converged “any-to-any” video experience by providing Internet TV, 3G/4G mobile TV and "sync-and-go" video delivery to devices such as mobile phones, personal computers, personal media players, IP-enabled set-top boxes and digital televisions, according to Harmonic.
The ProStream 4000 transcodes MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) content into a variety of formats suitable for mobile and Internet TV delivery, as well as for synchronizing content from a digital video recorder (DVR) for on-the-go viewing on portable media players. It delivers up to 16 channels in a one rack unit design and is software upgradeable, which will let operators scale the system as the need arises. Harmonic said the all-IP transcoder easily integrates into existing IP headends.
Harmonic said its HD encoder, the DiviCom Ion MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), delivers better value to operators by providing superior HD video quality for constant bit-rate (CBR) digital video services. The IP-based encoder is suited for IPTV deployments, as well as other switched video delivery applications.
The DiviCom Ion AVC HD encoder packs four HD H.264 channels, and up to four low-resolution picture-in-picture (PiP) channels, in a one rack unit chassis. At less than 75 watts per channel, Harmonic said DiviCom Ion consumes less power than other alternatives.
