CableLabs CEO Dick Green, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps and NBC/Universal Cable President Bridget Baker are set to speak at this year’s Key Issues Series, entitled “The Structure of the Video Programming Industry: Revolution, Regulation, or the Return of Yesterday's Battles?”
The Key Issues Series – which is being held Oct. 17 at The Cable Center as part of Cable Days 2008 – is presented by The Cable Center; the University of Colorado’s Silicon Flatirons Center for Law, Technology and Entrepreneurship; and Communications Technology Professionals.
According to The Cable Center, the series will consider the evolving structure of the video industry by focusing on three distinct sets of themes: 1) the opportunities and challenges of independent networks, 2) the role of access regulation, and 3) the impact of new technologies.
Panelists will discuss how competition, changing technologies and policy are affecting both producers and distributors of video content, forcing them to increasingly explore new business models – from streaming video to same-day DVD release to video-on-demand (VOD). They will also explore how these business models undermine established patterns of doing business and call into question existing regulatory policies, The Cable Center said.
"The video programming industry is facing a perfect storm of technological change, increased competition and calls for new regulation," said Jana Henthorn, The Cable Center's senior vice president of programs and education. "The Key Issues Series will bring together a stellar group of executives and policy experts to consider how this revolution is affecting business today and into the future."
