Workshop focuses on advanced video strategies

A workshop on opportunities and business strategies associated with advanced connectivity services for content providers is being held Sept. 18 in San Jose, Calif. Parks Associates is hosting the research workshop, called “The Business Cases for New Media at the San Jose Fairmont.” Featuring members of Parks’ analyst team, the workshop will focus on the impact of advanced connectivity on business strategies for service and content providers, CE and hardware manufacturers, and software developers.

The workshop will address the features of next-generation TV services critical in establishing differentiation, creating stickier services and building revenue. Additional workshop sessions will focus on the consumer decision process when purchasing new products, the market potential for electronic gaming applications, and consumer habits when interacting with digital media, including music, photos and video.

Verizon’s FiOS services expand in Mass.

Consumers and businesses in Monroe and Rowe, Mass., now have access to Verizon’s high-speed Internet service.

The service is being offered in most areas of the two towns, the latest of 24 western Massachusetts communities where Verizon is bringing the service. Verizon's high-speed Internet service will give Internet users the ability to download at speeds of 768 Kbps.

Additionally, consumers and small businesses in Millbury, Mass., now have access to Verizon’s FiOS TV service. Millbury is among 79 Massachusetts communities where the company's new television service is offered.

Verizon Business launches virtualization services

Verizon Business has launched its new Virtualization Consulting and Management Services, which are aimed at helping enterprises make the most of virtualized environments.

"Virtualization is quickly becoming the prevalent way for enterprises to gain flexibility with their IT resources and work more efficiently," said Wu Zhou, senior analyst at IDC.  "With its Virtualization Consulting and Management Services, Verizon Business can help its customers realize these cost savings along with the assurance of continued network reliability, performance and availability through a set of comprehensive SLAs."

And Verizon Business said that it is the first to market with the Trans-Pacific Express submarine cable network connecting the U.S. with mainland China, South Korea and Taiwan. Verizon Business teamed up with founding TPE Consortium members – China Telecom, China Netcom, China Unicom, Korea Telecom and Chunghwa Telecom (Taiwan) – to build the new 18,000-kilometer cable system.

Avaya certifies Juniper switches

Juniper Networks said a line of its Ethernet switches have been certified as compliant with IP telephony solutions from Avaya. The two have been development partners for three years. Juniper’s EX-series Ethernet switches are fully interoperable with Avaya’s Communication Manager R5.0, Avaya 9630 IP telephones and Avaya 4610SW IP telephones.

Juniper said that by leveraging its Junos software, the EX-series switches offer carrier-class continuous systems availability, automated network operations and a platform for open innovation that enables customers to quickly align the network with changing business requirements.

The two companies said they have multiple mutual customers that have deployed the Juniper and Avaya products together. They identified AmazingMail.com, a provider of advanced direct mail marketing solutions, as one of those customers.

Blinkx names Spira CFO

Blinkx has named Jonathan Spira as CFO of the company, effective Sept. 29. Spira replaces Matthew Service, who has served as both CFO and COO at blinkx since 2006. Service will continue in the role of COO.

Spira joins blinkx from J.Phineas International, a business consultancy company that he founded. Spira has been building and managing enterprise software, wireless communications, on-demand and consumer-product companies for 20 years.
