Bright House climbs aboard BigBand’s SDV bandwagon

Bright House Networks has become the latest cable operator to deploy BigBand Network’s switched digital video (SDV) technology.

BigBand said today that Bright House has completed the installation of its switched digital video offering in Orlando, Fla., while installation is underway in Tampa, Fla., and Indianapolis.

“We selected BigBand Networks for our SDV roll outs not only because the company has a proven SDV solution, but because BigBand has the ability to deploy SDV rapidly,” said Jeff Chen, senior vice president of advanced technologies at Bright House. “BigBand’s professionalism and expertise are helping accelerate our implementation of switched digital video. I’m especially pleased with the tight integration between our respective teams.”

BigBand said its SDV platform has been deployed, or is in the process of being deployed, by six of the top 10 operators across 28 cable systems that pass more than 16 million households. BigBand’s other cable customers include Comcast, Charter, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Cablevision, while Verizon is one of its telco customers.

Earlier this year, BigBand rolled out the fifth-generation of its switched digital video platform, which included performance and reliability enhancements to deliver more programming at a lower cost.

BigBand was the early pioneer on SDV. It took part in the first SDV trial in 2004, by Time Warner Cable in Austin, Texas.

SDV sends just the programming that is being watched in a service group, instead of the entire slate of a cable operator’s lineup, which allows MSOs to reclaim bandwidth for other services, such as adding more high-definition (HD) channels.
