Mediacom adds data subs, loses video customers

At year’s end 2014, Mediacom was down to 890,000 basic video customers. Its total number of broadband customers in 2013 was 965,000, but by the close of the most recent year, the company had increased its total broadband customer base to over a million.

Thanks to “significant contributions” from Arris, RDK Management announced this morning that it was adding more support for the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard that is widely employed in Europe and other parts of the world. The Reference Design Kit (RDK), which is a pre-integrated software bundle that provides a common platform for CPE devices, now supports in-band DVB Service Information (DVB-SI) elements.

Verizon report: IoT building momentum

According to recent report commissioned by Verizon, the Internet of Things (IoT) sector is being powered by technological, political and social factors that are driving more organizations to adopt IoT-enabled services and platforms. The use of social media and mobile technology—along with declining costs for IoT equipment, processing power and connectivity—were cited as factors for the current momentum behind IoT adoption.

Ergen back as Dish’s CEO: Clayton to retire

Dish Network co-founder and Chairman Charles Ergen is returning to the helm of the satellite TV provider as the company faces declining subscribers and a changing pay-TV industry. CEO Joseph Clayton, 64, said Monday he will retire March 31. He had been CEO since June 2011 and also holds the president title.

Interop using Taqua's tech to enable VoWiFi

Interop Technologies is adopting Taqua’s Virtual Mobile Core and Mobile Client, which will allow Interop to include voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) and Voice over LTE (VoLTE) among the communications features it provides among its cloud-based services.

FairPoint back to work this week in northern New England

FairPoint Communications workers have a new contract, and they're ready to return to work this week. More than 1,700 workers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont report for duty Wednesday for the first time since going on strike four months ago. Officials announced Sunday that they'd ratified a new contract.

TIA and Wi-Sun said they will cooperate in areas of mutual interest. One of the specific areas of mutual interest is the proposed TR-51 standard, which is being developed specifically for Smart Utility Networks.

Comcast revs up NASCAR coverage ahead of Daytona race

Ahead of Sunday’s Daytona 500, Comcast has added some NASCAR-related enhancements to its X1 operating platform as well new NASCAR VOD content. Comcast, which took over as the title sponsor of NASCAR back in September, also expanded its X1 Sports App to include scheduling information for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Level 3 vaults to 2nd place on Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard

Thanks to its acquisition of tw telecom last year, Level 3 has moved into second-place on Vertical System Group’s U.S. Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard. Based on retail port shares, Level 3 was behind top-ranked AT&T but ahead of third-place Verizon.

Frontier Communications posts 4Q profit

Frontier Communications Corp. (FTR) on Thursday reported fourth-quarter net income of $13.9 million. On a per-share basis, the Stamford, Connecticut-based company said it had net income of 1 cent. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 4 cents per share.

This appears to be the first time a news app has been developed for a game console. Users will gain access to multiple simultaneous streams of live video as well as on-demand content, entertainment news, original programming and highlights from ABC News programs.

Falling ratings are leading many top cable networks to jam more ads in “to meet audience guarantees made to advertisers and prop up revenue despite falling ad prices,” according to The Wall Street Journal.

Cox Communications has formed a joint venture with Cleveland Clinic to further develop in-home healthcare services. The new telehealth and home health services will be offered by the joint venture Vivre Health.

Mediacom, Discovery ink long-term distribution agreement

Discovery Communications and Mediacom Communications announced this morning that they’ve renewed their long-term distribution agreement. The latest deal included TV Everywhere rights across multiple platforms for authenticated Mediacom subscribers of Discovery’s 13 networks.
