Rentrak’s report says VOD orders increased 43 percent

Rentrak’s latest “State of VOD” report found an increase of 43 percent in orders and a 29 percent increase in orders last year, compared with the previous year.

Providing an overview of video-on-demand (VOD) usage trends and growth, Rentrak’s report takes a look into the playtime hours across calendar quarters and reveals which content types consumers are spending more time with, as well as which programming categories are most popular.

Other highlights included:

  • In 2007, Rentrak measured more than three billion on-demand orders from their operator partners (excluding adult content).
  • In 2007, free on-demand (FOD) accounted for 70 percent of non-adult orders, while subscription VOD (SVOD) accounted for 27 percent and television on-demand (TOD) accounted for 3 percent.
  • Adjusting for Rentrak's addition of MSOs and systems in 2007, Rentrak saw an increase of 43 percent in orders and a 29 percent increase in unique set-top boxes accessing VOD year-over-year.
  • All of the top five FOD categories experienced growth year-over-year. TV Entertainment was the fastest-growing category, with an increase in orders of 120 percent and an increase of 68 percent in unique set-top boxes accessing the category.
