EGT to demo VIPr transcoder at Expo

EGT is set to release a network appliance that allows operators to make the most efficient use of their networks at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2008 in Philadelphia next week.

EGT will showcase its VIPr Closed-loop Transcoding technology. EGT’s VIPr transcoder will accept MPEG-4 high-definition (HD) or MPEG-2 HD content, and it will output either MPEG-2 CBR for switched digital video (SDV) applications or MPEG-2 closed-loop statistically multiplexed outputs for denser packaging of HD content into QAMs, the company said.

EGT’s VIPr will also downconvert HD content to standard-definition (SD) content to satisfy legacy SD-only set–top boxes.

“VIPr’s flexible software architecture provides superior video quality in transcoding and statistical multiplexing applications through proprietary algorithms that tightly couple the encode and decode stages,” said John Hartung, CTO of EGT. “This coupling allows feed-forward and feedback optimization that enables HD 3:1 statistical multiplexing quality that is not possible in existing independent encode-decode and rate shaping architectures.”

EGT’s HeadEnd Micro (HEMi) network edge processor will also be on display, demonstrating new features designed to extend the applications for HEMi into PEG channel encoding and IP transport.
