Aurora to intro 1GHz alternative to FTTH

Aurora Networks said that it is developing a new access solution for its optical nodes that can extend the RF spectrum of an MSO’s coax plant above 1 GHz to enable the provision of data services at speeds of hundreds of megabits per second (Mbps).

The capability is designed to work over existing coax from the node to the subscriber, which means any new data services should integrate with an MSO’s current product offerings, along with established back office operations and procedures.

The technology, called BitCoax, will allow operators to avoid upgrading their nodes or replacing their coax with fiber to deliver services competitive with fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.

“The coax plant has a huge amount of untapped capacity, and Aurora’s node can help cable operators exploit that bandwidth, optimally in a fiber deep architecture,” said John Dahlquist, VP of marketing for Aurora. “By enabling operators to offer ultra-high-speed data services without changing their network operations, Aurora helps MSOs extend their lead against their competitors.”
