TiVo announced today that its customers will soon be able to download movies from Walt Disney Studios to their TiVo digital video recorders (DVRs) that have broadband connections.
The service will be available later this year to TiVo’s Series2 and Series3 subscribers. Titles will be available for rent through an agreement with Disney-ABC and CinemaNow, a digital entertainment provider of Hollywood movies and TV shows across multiple platforms and the latest partner to join TiVo's broadband efforts.
The companies will offer the movies for a 24-hour rental period in standard-definition (SD), with many also available in high-definition (HD).
TiVo also announced that it has partnered with the Chicago Tribune to deliver the recommendations of the newspaper's TV critic directly to subscribers' televisions, while TiVo will automatically record the recommended shows listed in the newspaper's TV grids.
TiVo said the concept is one of several new initiatives designed to explore new ways for the newspaper industry to adapt to the changing media landscape.
With the feature, TiVo subscribers can obtain TV critic Maureen Ryan's programming suggestions right on their TV. In addition, TiVo subscribers will be able to download recurring video commentaries recorded by Ryan right to their TVs.
