RCN’s Chicago market going all digital

RCN Corp. is switching to all-digital TV programming in its Chicago market today.

“RCN’s all-digital strategy puts us in the position to make good on the promise of offering approximately 100 HD channels in the future,” said RCN VP and GM Tom McKay.

With the switch, RCN is recreating its cable offering and re-branding its expanded basic offering and digital tier offering as the new Signature and Premiere packages, respectively.

The Signature package, formerly with 80 channels, will re-launch with 180 channels. The Premiere package will add high-definition (HD) selections and channel pods, which group RCN’s Premiere channel tier by genre and offer subscribers the ability to pay only for the programming they want to watch.

Even with all of the new channels that are being added, pricing for both RCN’s Signature ($56.94) and Premiere ($26.90) packages will remain the same, according to RCN.

RCN is also upgrading its video on-demand (VOD) platform and adding additional free content, as well as subscription and pay-VOD programming.

Once converted to all digital, Chicago area customers will need at least a standard digital converter box or a CableCard to view the new Signature and Premiere lineups. HD and HD DVR converters can also be used and are necessary to view Signature and Premiere HD channels, the company said.
