Cox preps for bandwidth expansion with Vyyo

As rumored, Cox Communications will expand the capabilities of its cable networks using equipment from Vyyo.

Cox will deploy Vyyo's 3 GHz taps and passive network elements as part of its newbuild architecture and for business services in its existing network. Vyyo has received initial orders from multiple Cox systems.

The deal was anticipated with last week's news that Vyyo had attracted both new financing and a pair of high-powered executives.

Vyyo said the inclusion of its 3 GHz passives enables cable system operators to meet current and future bandwidth needs with no impact on current 1 GHz networks. At the same time, the inclusion of the taps prepares a company for the ability to leverage Vyyo Spectrum Overlay active products to achieve bandwidth of up to approximately 3 GHz for fiber-like broadcast or targeted service delivery to residences and businesses.

Vyyo Spectrum Overlay is designed to allow cable companies to increase bandwidth to fiber-like performance at a relatively modest cost -- under $125 per home passed, or approximately 10 percent of the estimated cost per home of telco fiber builds -- while maintaining their existing investment in their HFC networks and set-top boxes.
