ESPN's Driessen named WICT's Woman of the Year

Christine Driessen, executive vice president and chief financial officer, ESPN, was named by WICT as its 2014 Woman of the Year. Jennifer Mirgorod of Turner Broadcasting System and Deborah Picciolo of Time Warner Cable are the organization's two Women To Watch.

Miami next on AT&T’s GigaPower hit list; Gig speeds up in Austin

AT&T’s GigaPower service will touch down in the city of Miami, which is also in Comcast’s footprint. The Miami announcement came a day after AT&T said that over the coming weeks it would start offering existing subscribers 1 Gbps speeds in Austin.

Mediacom Communications, CSG extend contract

Mediacom Communications and CSG International have extended their 15-year partnership with a new multi-year contract extension. With the new deal, Mediacom will broaden the end-to-end customer care and billing solutions provided by CSG to expand beyond triple play services into home automation and other lines of business.

SCTE to provide details on Energy 2020 during Expo session

Spearheaded by Comcast’s John Schanz and other industry thought leaders, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) will provide more details on its recently announced Energy 2020 initiative at Cable-Tec Expo next month in Denver. Schanz, chief network officer and executive vice president of Comcast Cable, will speak about the cable industry’s new collaborative energy program that was first announced in June.

Telstra deploys Netgear’s Wi-Fi gateway

Telstra, which is Australia’s largest telecommunications service provider, has given a boost to in-home Wi-Fi speeds with a new gateway from Netgear. By using 802.11ac, DOCSIS 3.0 and Netgear’s Beamforming+ technology, Netgear said its work with Telstra boosted home network Wi-Fi speeds up to three times faster than previous speeds.

Senators propose a la carte for broadcast stations

Two Senators have floated an idea for fixing the retransmission consent mess; they are proposing a la carte for broadcast stations. The idea would be that broadcasters who charge too much might find themselves losing viewers and therefore money.

Polish service provider picks Arris’ E6000

Warsaw, Poland-based Netia has selected Arris’ E6000 Converged Edge Router (CER) to support its broadband service. Netia, which is one of the largest telecommunications providers in Poland, said it picked the CCAP-based E6000 to support future roll outs of the cable industry’s DOCSIS 3.1 specifications. Netia will work with Arris reseller Vector to deploy the E6000 CER.

MetroCast lights up fiber in Miss.

MetroCast Communications has fired up a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service in two communities that it serves in Mississippi. The recent FTTH deployments in the Mississippi towns of Starkville and Oxford followed on the heels of a deployment in Carthage, Mississippi earlier this year.

Judge rejects $324.5M settlement of tech wage case

A federal judge has decided a $324.5 million settlement isn't enough to cover the damages done to more than 60,000 high-tech workers in a class-action lawsuit alleging Google and Apple conspired with other technology companies to block their top employees from getting better job offers. The ruling Friday by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh scotches a settlement reached in April, prolonging a 3-year-old case.

Suddenlink begins gigabit upgrade

The MSO has embarked on a three-year program to accelerate Internet service rates. It plans to increase the rate of its Flagship 15 Mbps tier to 200 Mbps, and its top Billboard 107 Mbps tier to 1 Gbps. The company anticipates expanding its capex by $230 million.

Cultural changes in attitude toward TV

A CBS survey of 700 people in the U.S. with Internet and television connections last year found that 28 percent said they're watching more television than they did a year ago.  That may not seem like much, but there's a long history of people saying they are watching, or plan to watch, less TV — even as Nielsen measurements proved the opposite is true. In other words, liking television is becoming more socially acceptable.

RCN locks up more Showtime VOD content

After announcing a TV Everywhere deal last month, RCN said it had significantly expanded the number of available VOD choices from Showtime. Authenticated RCN subscribers now have access to “10 times” the number of programming from Showtime On Demand.

Univision Communications promotes Cuddihy, Rodriquez to executive team

Univision Communications Inc. announced that it had promoted Kevin Cuddihy and Jessica Rodriguez to its executive team. Cuddihy, a former Comcast Spotlight exec, was named president of local media while Rodriguez was appointed chief marketing officer, effective immediately.

Google using its clout to widen use of encryption

Google is wielding the power of its dominant Internet search engine to push more websites into protecting the people using their services. The move involves a change in Google's closely guarded formula for determining the rankings of its search results. Websites that automatically encrypt their services will now be boosted higher in Google Inc.'s recommendation system.

AMC Networks 2Q profit falls 57 percent

AMC Networks Inc. on Thursday reported earnings that decreased by 57 percent in its second quarter, but beat analysts' expectations. The New York-based company said net income fell to $58.7 million, or 81 cents per share, from $135.7 million, or $1.87 per share, in the same quarter one year earlier.
